Daryl Burch
Artist Biography
I was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to French/Italian parents in 1943, during the most turbulent period in history. I took art lessons the whole time that I was growing up and majored in art at Oklahoma Central University. Although I love doing art my real passion was always music.
I played over 3000 professional gigs on drums and also many on keyboard. I played jazz, rock, country, R&B, Zydeco and anything that would pay the bills. I played in the studios in Los Angeles as well as wrote music for a number of venues. Now I am retired from playing professionally but I have a home studio where I still compose. My art is influenced by my music.
I try to tell happy stories in a sad world. My Philosophy, at the moment, is fairly simple. I combine loose and funky rhythms, little vignettes, places, scattered pieces of emotions, historical people, and movement all seen from different perspectives. Incongruities add drama and so this is a reoccurring theme in my work. All of this is done in an attempt to describe what I see, how I feel, what I hear and what I am thinking at the time. The symbolism is ambiguous so everyone can take away something different. I continually strive for that elusive individuality. A lot of thought is put into the pictorial geometry while trying to cover a number of isms. The use of collage and assemblage takes me to my youth in the sixties and this sort of mixed media is a comfort zone for me. It is important for me to strive for spirituality, sincerity and humility with the belief that when it all comes together the work will take on a life of its own that transcend time and culture.
Daryl’s work was featured in our Spring 2021 Group Exhibition, on view March 5 - August 1, 2021.
